Man fighting for life in hospital after weekend street bike attack

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was assaulted in the street yesterday and left with critical injuries.

A small parade of shops were sealed off this morning at the junction of Goschen Street and Prescot Road in Old Swan.

The victim, 27, was attacked while on his bike and sustained a serious head injury which has been described as "critical."

Onlookers who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, at 5pm, described the man being unconscious but breathing.

His bike was lying on the ground a few yards away.

Paramedics attended the scene and rushed the man to hospital.

Locals said he lived just a few streets away from where the attack happened.

A man, 30, from Crosby, was arrested on suspicion of assault and taken to a police station on Merseyside.

He remains in custody and will soon be interviewed by detectives.

Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and are speaking to businesses in the area in a bid to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detective Inspector Jennie Beck, of Merseyside Police, said: “Our investigation into this incident continues and we remain very keen to speak to anyone with any information that could assist our enquiries.

“The investigation is in its early stages and at this time detectives are trying to ascertain the motive for the attack. Prescot Road was exceptionally busy yesterday afternoon and I would urge anyone who was in the area at about 4pm, who may have seen the incident, or who has any phone/dashcam footage or information, which could help us with our inquiries to get in touch.

"A lot of buses also use this route, so I would appeal to any bus passengers who may have seen the incident to come forward, as they information they have could be vital to our inquiries."
