Man fighting for life in hospital after falling from bridge over M60

A man is fighting for life in hospital after falling from a bridge that stretches over the M60 motorway.

Both carriageways of the motorway were closed for around an hour due to the ‘police incident’ on Saturday night (June 5).

Police were called to a bridge on Broadway, in Chadderton, Oldham, just before 7.30pm.

A man later fell from the bridge, Greater Manchester Police said.

Emergency crews were called at around 7.30pm (ASP)

He was rushed to hospital by ambulance “with potential life-changing injuries”.

The force has today confirmed that the man is “still in hospital in life-threatening condition”.

The M60 was closed in both directions between junction 22 for Oldham and junction 23 for Ashton-under-Lyne as emergency crews attended the incident on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a person standing on a bridge.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area as traffic built up as a result of the road closure.

Pictures from the scene showed a number of police vehicles stationed at the slip road for junction 22.

A police cordon was in place and an ambulance was seen parked up on a bridge over the M60 near junction 22.

The motorway was reopened at around 9pm.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson last night said: “Officers were called just before 7.30pm this evening (5 June 2021) to a report of a man who later fell from a bridge on Broadway in Chadderton, Oldham.

“Emergency services attended and the man was taken to hospital with potential life-changing injuries.

“The road has reopened.”

A spokesperson today confirmed that the man is “still in hospital in life-threatening condition”.
