Man fighting for life after crash as driver runs from scene

A man is in a critical condition after a crash in Runcorn.

The 41-year-old was a passenger in a silver Mini Cooper when it crashed at around 6pm, on Monday, October 17. Police and ambulance crews rushed to the incident, on the A533 Southern Expressway, and found the car had come off the road and overturned onto an embankment.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended as the passenger was trapped in the car. Police confirmed the driver had fled from the scene.

After the passenger was released by firefighters he was taken to Aintree hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life. Police have confirmed and investigation has been launched and a 29-year-old man, from Widnes, has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation.

Police Constable Liz Thompson, of the Serious and Complex Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a serious collision which has left a man with critical injuries. As part of our investigation we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and believes they may have witnessed the collision.

"The same goes for anyone with any CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident. We would also like to hear from anyone who witnessed, or anyone with any dashcam footage of the silver Mini Cooper being driven from Widnes Town Centre, towards Runcorn prior to the collision.

"From our enquiries so far, we believe the car drove from Widnes Town Centre at 5.47pm and across the Mersey Gateway bridge towards Runcorn. I urge anyone with any information – no matter how small – to get in touch."

Information can be reported online at www.Cheshire.police.uk/tell-us, or by calling 101, quoting IML 1391017.
