Man fighting for his life in hospital after serious crash on A694 in Gateshead

A man is in a critical condition in hospital following a serious crash in Gateshead.

Police were called to a one-vehicle collision on a stretch of the A694 Lockhaugh Road heading towards Winlaton Mill at 9.55am on Saturday.

It is understood a distinctive, dark green Vauxhall Vectra estate was travelling west when it left the road and collided with a fence.

Emergency services attended and found the driver, a 35-year-old man, had suffered serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

A 51-year-old man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.

Police are now investigating the collision and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Anyone who saw what happened or saw the vehicle prior to the collision is urged to come forward to police.

"Officers are especially keen to hear from other drivers who were in the area around that time and may have dashcam footage."

"Anyone with information which could assist us is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference 297 130620.
