Man fighting for his life in hospital after crash outside school in Boldon

A man is fighting for his life in hospital following a collision in South Tyneside.

The crash, which involved one vehicle, happened shortly before 3am on Thursday on New Road in Boldon.

Police say a white Mercedes collided with some metal railings outside Boldon School. Emergency services attended and the driver, a 48-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.

Now police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and assist officers who are investigating the incident.

Sgt Lee Butler, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, said: "This was a serious collision that has left a man with significant injuries in hospital.

"The man's next of kin have been notified and his family continue to be given support by our experienced family liaison officers.

"We are committed to finding out the cause of the collision, and we are now appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident or who saw the Mercedes in the moments before to get in touch.

"We'd also ask anybody who lives in the area to check their CCTV or dashcam footage – if you see anything that may assist with our enquiries, please give us a call."

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 87 160120 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
