Man fighting for his life in hospital after being struck by a train

A man is fighting for his life and in a critical condition in hospital after being struck by a train.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on July 18 after reports of a man being hit by a train just after midnight.

A North East Ambulance Service officer was dispatched to the scene, alongside three Hazardous Area Response Teams, an ambulance and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance.

The incident occurred at North Shields Metro station in North Tyneside, with paramedics attending to the man at the scene before proceeding to transport him to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.

According to Chronicle Live, he remains in hospital with his condition being described as "critical but stable" at this time.

Police say there is no one else believed to have been involved in the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly after midnight on Saturday evening we received a report that a man had been struck by a train at North Shields Metro Station.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the man was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

"He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

"Nobody else is believed to have been involved in the incident."

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 12.17pm on Sunday to reports of a person having been struck by a train at North Shields Metro Station.

"We sent an officer, three of our HART teams, an ambulance and a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance and took the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries."

Metros were cancelled for the rest of the night travelling between Tynemouth and St James and Tynemouth and Longbenton as a result of the incident.
