Man fighting for his life after car smashes into bus stop

A man is fighting for his life after his car crashed into a Liverpool bus stop.

Police confirmed road closures are in place after the man's Renault Clio careered into the bus stop on Childwall Valley Road .

The accident happened after the driver suffered what a spokesman called a "suspected medical episode" at the wheel.

Merseyside Police said the man has been taken to hospital in a "critical condition" after the crash near Garden Lodge Grove and Brittarge Brow in Netherley around 1.30pm today.

There are no reported other casualties but emergency services remain at the scene and the road remains closed near the junction of Naylor's Road.

A police spokesman told the ECHO: "We can confirm officers are currently in Childwall Valley Road following reports of a collision this afternoon.

"At around 1.30pm, a report was received that a Renault Clio had been in collision with a bus stop near to the junction with Naylor’s Road."

He added: "Emergency services are in attendance and one man has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

"Road closures are currently in place on Childwall Valley Road and motorists are asked to avoid the area."
