Man fighting for his life after car comes off the road in serious Newcastle crash

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a car came off the road during a serious crash in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to a one-vehicle collision on Stamfordham Road at Birney Hill at about 5.45pm on Sunday.

Police said a blue Citroen AX came off the road for currently unknown reasons with the 27-year-old driver suffering serious injuries to his chest. He remains in hospital in a critical condition.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the collision and why the vehicle came to leave the road.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to come forward and urged anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.

They particularly want to speak to people who stopped at the scene immediately after the collision occurred.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police, said: "We are asking the public to come forward following this serious collision which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.

"His family have been informed and are being offered any support they need.

"I am keen to hear from witnesses who may have been in the area between Throckley and Ponteland yesterday afternoon and who may have seen a blue Citreon AX travelling at any stage.

"Please check any dashcam footage and let us know if you see anything that can assist our investigation.

"We understand a number of people stopped at the scene immediately after the collision before emergency services arrived.

"I am also asking those individuals to get in touch and make themselves known – you may have crucial information that can help us establish what exactly has happened."
