Man fighting for his life after being hit by train

A man is fighting for his life after being struck by a train.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of somebody lying on the tracks.

The man was hit by a Preston to Ormskirk Northern train on the mainline as it approached its final destination in West Lancashire on Friday night.

Emergency services were called to Ormksirk station just after 10pm.

Police have ruled out foul play and said the man was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Ambulance officials said the man suffered "multiple severe injuries" after being struck by the train.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to Ormskirk station shortly after 10pm on May 7 (Friday) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and a man was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Northern said the train driver raised the alarm after "striking a person on the tracks near to Ormskirk station".

A spokesperson for Northern said: “Shortly before 10pm on Friday 7 May the driver of the Preston to Ormskirk service reported striking a person on the tracks near to Ormskirk station.

"“Emergency services attended and the remaining Northern service (Ormskirk to Preston) was cancelled.”

North West Ambulance Service said a number of vehicles were sent to the scene including an hazardous area response team (HART).

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 22.07 on Friday, May 7.

"We have taken a patient to hospital."
