Man fighting for his life after being found with critical injuries next to wheelchair

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being found lying in the middle of the road with critical injuries.

Police have launched an investigation after the man was discovered injured in the early hours of Monday, January 24.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Kirkdale, Liverpool, at approximately 3.20am to a number of reports that a man had been found lying in the middle of the road, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The male was rushed to hospital with injuries to both his stomach and neck.

Officers from Merseyside Police have described his condition as critical.

Detectives say it is not yet clear how the man came to be injured and or why a wheelchair was also found close by.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and notify his next of kin.

Police set up a cordon on the residential streets at the heart of the incident while forensic work takes place.

Officers are carrying out house-to-house, CCTV and forensic enquiries in the local area.

A police spokesperson said: "We were contacted by a member of the public at 3.20am who reported that a male had been found with injuries to his stomach and neck lying in the middle of the road in Avon Close/Whitefield Close.

"A wheelchair was also found close by."

Detective Inspector Jennie Beck said: "Enquiries are at the very early stages as we seek to establish what has happened to the man.

"We will be speaking to people living in the local area and carrying out CCTV enquiries.

"I would ask anyone who was in the area of Avon Close/Whitfield Close in Kirkdale in the early hours of this morning who saw or heard anything suspicious to contact us as a matter of urgency."
