A man has been left fighting for his life following a car crash in the early hours of this morning.
The BMW X5 driver was seriously injured following a single car crash on the A78 near Eglinton roundabout at 1.35am.
Emergency services raced to the Ayrshire road and the female passenger was taken to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment to what are described as minor injuries.
But the male driver was conveyed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with what are described as life threatening injuries.
An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the crash and the road is currently closed southbound at the Eglinton Interchange.
Officers are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident or who may have seen the BMW on the road prior to the collision to contact them.
Sergeant Craig Beaver said: “Enquiries are ongoing in to the cause of the crash and we are appealing for anyone with any information to get in touch. I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time to review dashcam footage and get in touch.
“We anticipate the road will be closed for some time and we would ask motorists to avoid the area if possible.”
