A man was attacked and robbed of cash as he made his way to a takeaway in Bellshill.
The terrified victim thought he was going to be stabbed during the assault on a path between Baird Place and Kelvin Road.
Daryl McGregor, 32, a prisoner, was jailed for 15 months when he appeared from custody via videolink at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.
He admitted assaulting and robbing William Meechan on February 28 then using his bank card to get items worth £16.38 at a garage.
McGregor’s then partner, Lyndsey Nolan, 29, of Hattonrigg Road, Bellshill, had her not guilty pleas to the charges accepted.
Jennifer Cunningham, prosecuting, said the victim had withdrawn cash from a machine and was on his way to a takeaway about 10pm when McGregor pounced.
He punched Mr Meechan, causing a black eye and grazing, then went through his pockets.
The fiscal stated: “McGregor then shouted to his partner ‘Give me that knife’.
“Although Mr Meechan didn’t see a knife, he was scared he would be stabbed and stopped resisting.
“The accused took his mobile phone, a bank card and £110.
“Nothing was recovered, but McGregor was identified through CCTV at the Shell garage in North Road where he used the bank card.”
Defence agent Roberto Manini said McGregor, who admitted previous convictions, has struggled with mental health issues and remembered little about the robbery.
But Mr Manini claimed to have witnessed “a sea change in his attitude” after visiting him in prison recently.
McGregor had been in custody since March 6 in connection with the charges.
It’s understood that because the 15-month sentence was backdated he would be eligible for immediate release, given that prisoners usually serve only half of their sentence.
