Man feared dead after disappearing while swimming in Shadwell Basin

A young man is feared dead after he vanished in a popular London swimming spot.

A large emergency service presence was seen searching Shadwell Basin in east London this evening.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene at around 6pm.

Two hours later they appeared to have scaled back their search for the 22-year-old man.

While divers and emergency service workers on boats scoured the man-made lake some people looking to escape the heat of the sun continued swimming on the opposite bank.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said: "Police were called at 6.06pm to Garnet Street, E1 (Shadwell Basin) to a report of a person seen to enter the water.

"Officers and the marine policing unit are currently on scene along with other emergency service personnel conducting a search."

It is likely that the man had headed to the pool in a bid to cool off from today's ferocious 33C heat.

A 29-year-old man drowned in Shadwell Basin back in 2016 after jumping into the water with 100 other people.

At the end of June this year Carl Storer tragically died while saving a nine-year-old girl in Chasewater Reservoir in Burntwood.

The 21-year-old managed to get the girl to safety but sadly could not be saved himself.

The UK's current heat wave has coincided with a number of water based deaths.

In the last week of June two were discovered in the water off Torquay and another near Prussia Cove in Cornwall.
