A man was struck and killed by a car Friday in north suburban unincorporated Antioch.

Authorities responded about 11:15 p.m. to the area of Route 173, west of Hunt Club Road for reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, the Lake County sheriff’s office said in a statement. They found a 44-year-old man in the roadway; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation, a woman, 33, driving a Volkswagen Jetta west on Route 173 hit the man who was standing in the westbound lanes for unknown reasons, the sheriff’s office said.

The woman was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

The man’s vehicle was found stuck on a large landscaping rock near the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit is investigating.
