A 71-year-old man died after he was hit by a passing car Wednesday in Douglas on the South Side.

Refaat Shafikmeshreki was struck by a northbound vehicle about 6:10 p.m. while he was walking in the street in the 3400 block of South King Drive, Chicago police said.

Shafikmeshreki was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy ruled his death an accident.

The driver, a 44-year-old woman, told officers that Shafikmeshreki was walking in the roadway near the crosswalk and continued to walk into traffic, police said. She was cited for failure to exercise due care to a pedestrian in the roadway.
