Riot squad swarms Sydney street after man shot dead in broad daylight

Riot police arrive in Lewisham, after a man was stabbed.

One man has been shot dead and another has been injured, triggering a huge police presence around a house in Sydney's inner west on Friday afternoon.

Police have told the ABC a man who they initially said was stabbed to death on Henry Street in Lewisham was, in fact, shot.

Emergency services were called to the area about 1:00pm and found a man with "serious" injuries.

He died while being taken to hospital.

Police have also confirmed a second man, aged 55, was found with a gunshot wound to his head in a home on adjacent Victoria Street.

He remains in a serious condition in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The two men are believed to be known to each other and police said the shootings appear to be targeted.

A woman could be seen gesturing to several officers on Victoria Street, before evidence bags were placed over her hands and she was led to the back of an unmarked car.

NSW Police Chief Inspector Despa Fitzgerald said the woman had presented herself as a witness, but was not a person of interest in their investigations.

"In respect to the inner west police area command doing canvassing she has presented herself as a witness to what she may have seen," she said.

Chief Inspector Fitzgerald said the incident was being treated as "suspicious".

"We are actively looking for anyone that may know if he was with any persons, at this stage information has not been confirmed so that's why we are appealing for witnesses," she said.

She said police were still trying to identify the dead man.

There have been at least 30 public place shootings in NSW in the past five weeks.

Several police cars were called to the scene, and heavily armed riot-squad officers could be seen on the street surrounding a property.

A helicopter landed in nearby Petersham Park as police rescue vehicles were also seen blocking off several roads while detectives spoke to residents.

The man was treated on the oval by paramedics for about half an hour, resident Olivia Price said.

"I could see someone doing CPR in the back of an ambulance ... It was definitely grey, wet and rainy.

"There was a lot of commotion going on."

A crime scene was established by officers from the inner west police area command, with several streets blocked off.

Resident Mick Buckley was waiting nearby to be allowed home to his wife and said he felt nervous.

"I just went for a walk and I can't get home," he said.

"My wife is up there and I can't get in — It could be a few hours.

"It's a bit of a shock, these things don't happen every day."
