Man fatally shot in Logan Square

Feb. 20--A 30-year-old man has died after he was shot in the head during a drive-by in Logan Square late Thursday night.

About 11:40 p.m., the man was sitting in a parked SUV in the 2000 block of West Fullerton Avenue when someone inside a passing gray pickup truck fired shots, hitting the man in the left side of the head, police said.

The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. He was pronounced dead there early Friday, police said. Authorities believe the shooting may be gang-related.

The man was identified as Julio Ramos, of the 4000 block of West Oakdale Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic at 3:17 a.m., according to the office.

Following the shooting, police taped off a portion of the eastbound lanes on the block while detectives investigated. The SUV where the 31-year-old had been sitting was parked on the curb about halfway down the block, still running. The SUV's front driver-side window had been shot out, and glass littered the ground.

Branko Filimonovic, who lives on the block, said he was getting ready to watch a movie when he heard four gunshots.

"I had just sat down," Filimonovic said. "My dog sat right next to me, cuddled up, and then I heard 'boom, boom, boom, boom.' "

Filimonovic said he looked out his window and saw a group of men around the SUV calling police and saying someone had been shot.

"Within literally three or four minutes, 15 cops were coming from every direction," he said.

Filimonovic said he has lived on the block for more than a decade. Standing in the frigid cold watching detectives work early Friday, he said "craziness" like shootings are not normal for the area.

"Things don't happen around here like this. Nothing to do with this craziness," he said.
