Driver shot in head, crashes car into steel beam, injuring 3 passengers in Chatham

A driver was fatally shot and crashed his car into a steel beam, injuring three passengers in Chatham on the South Side Sunday night.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was driving in the 8300 block of South Vincennes Avenue when he was shot in the head by someone in a red van about 11:35 p.m., police said.

He crashed his car and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Three women in the car were injured in the crash, police and fire officials said.

A 28-year-old woman suffered a broken hip and leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

Another female suffered body traum, and was also taken to the hospital also in critical condition, police said.

Another woman, 29, suffered head trauma and a broken hand and was taken to St. Bernard hospital in fair condition, police said.

No one was in custody.
