Man falls from M53 bridge as air ambulance lands at scene

A man has been taken to hospital by air ambulance after falling from a motorway bridge.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and closed off the M53 motorway after the incident around 12.40pm on Tuesday.

Police said they were called after reports "a man had fallen from a bridge at Junction 2" which is the Moreton turn-off.

The man was taken to hospital by air ambulance, Merseyside Police said.

The severity of his injuries is unknown at this stage.

The incident understandably sparked traffic disruption with the motorway initially closed both ways between Junction 2 Moreton and Junction 3 Woodchurch.

Most closures have now been lifted with North West Motorway Police confirming around 2pm that only two lanes remained closed southbound.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "Emergency services are in attendance on the M53 today (Tuesday 15 June)

"At around 12.40pm we received a report that a man had fallen from a bridge at Junction 2.

"He was taken to hospital for his injuries by air ambulance."
