Man falls from flats and is rushed to hospital as police surround building

A man has been rushed to hospital after falling from a block of flats.

Multiple police cars have swarmed a street in Liverpool's Georgian Quarter, near the city centre, this evening.

An air ambulance also landed on a field nearby.

Merseyside Police confirmed a man has now been taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling from a flat window in Falkner Square.

An eyewitness said that the man was sat in a third floor window of a flat and reportedly "slipped" before falling to the ground below.

The property where the incident took place is a three-storey building, which the Liverpool Echo understands has been broken up into a number of individual student flats.

Police officers were seen making enquiries with other people living in the building and speaking to people who were at the scene when they arrived.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said they saw the man sitting in the window of his flat, which is believed to be on the third floor. He then slipped and fell to the ground below.

The witness, who asked not to be named, said: "He was sat up there [the back of the building] in his window, I've seen people living there do it before - usually to have a smoke. Then it looked like he slipped and he just fell down.

"I heard a commotion over there after it happened and there were a fair few people there, one was on the phone with the ambulance I think. The emergency services were here within minutes."

Another woman who lives in the area said she saw a number of police vans and cars at around 4pm when she went out, but didn't think anything of it due to the number of patrols in the city at the moment.

She said: "I saw the air ambulance land before and looked out again and saw the cordon. It's awful what's happened, I hope he is okay."

Several other streets have been taped off by police, including Sandon Street and Lowther Street.

Many of the emergency service vehicles that had arrived have now left the scene.

A number of police officers, however, have remained in place to guard the cordon while detectives have entered the property.

At the back of the building, there are more officers with cops cordoning off a car park.

A statement from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Toxteth after a man fell from a flat this afternoon, Wednesday 5 October.

"At around 4.10pm, we were called to Falkner Square to reports of a man having fallen from a flat.

"The man was seriously injured and has been taken to hospital.

"A cordon remains in place and enquiries are ongoing at the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC with reference 644."
