Man facing rape and DV charges over two alleged assaults in four days

The man's case was heard in Maroochydore Magistrates Court this morning.

A 54-year-old man is in police custody charged with 13 domestic violence-related offences, including rape, after an attack on a woman near Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.

Police say the woman, 29, suffered significant injuries and was allegedly strangled, causing her to lose consciousness, then raped and held against her will on Friday.

A Queensland Police Service media release said the woman escaped and reported the incident to police.

No arrest was made at that time.

Police said the woman then noticed the man following her and her young son while they were walking along Queen Street at Kings Beach yesterday morning.

He allegedly caught up with the pair and assaulted the woman while armed with a knife, stealing her handbag during the altercation.

The woman and boy sought refuge at a nearby business, without suffering any physical injuries.

Yesterday afternoon, police arrested the man when they executed a search warrant at a property near Caloundra.

He was charged with two counts each of rape, assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation, four counts of aggravated breach of a Domestic Violence Protection Order, one count each of deprivation of liberty, threatening violence and stealing.

The charges were mentioned briefly in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court this morning.

The man did not appear in court and will remain in custody until his case returns to court on May 1.
