Man faces court over alleged tomahawk attack

A man extradited from Queensland over an alleged tomahawk attack remains behind bars.

James Reece Fogarty faced Raymond Terrace Local Court on Thursday charged with affray and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The Tarro man, 23, was arrested on the Sunshine Coast this week.

He did not apply for bail on Thursday and Magistrate Ian Cheetham adjourned the matter to September 15.

It came after police were called to Alliance Street at East Maitland on July 13 following a report that five people had arrived at a property and were arguing with the 28-year-old woman and 35-year-old man who lived there.

Police allege the female resident was assaulted during the encounter and the man was allegedly struck several times with a tomahawk.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital with back injuries and was later released.

Before Mr Fogarty's arrest, police charged a 20-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man over the alleged incident - they remain before the courts.
