Man faces court over $160,000 worth of allegedly stolen art

A cleaner accused of stealing $160,000 worth of art following a fatal fire on the Central Coast last year has faced court again over a raft of charges related to the alleged theft of 87 works.

Maitland man Anthony Lesley Jones appeared at Wyong Local Court on Tuesday, where he faced 10 counts including larceny (greater than $15,000), possession of a prohibited drug and eight weapons-related charges.

Emergency services were called to a shopping centre on The Entrance Road, The Entrance, about 4.30pm on October 20, 2019, following reports of a building fire.

A 69-year-old man was found unconscious inside a shop. Firefighters administered CPR, but were unable to revive him.

Mr Jones is accused of stealing artworks from the premises while employed to clean the site after the fire.

He was arrested after a premises at High Street, Maitland, was searched by police in May.

Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis continued Mr Jones's bail on Tuesday. She adjourned the matter to June 16 at Wyong Local Court.
