Man faces court following police shooting near Vic-NSW border

The confrontation with police happened at the Richardsons Bend campground in Barnawartha North.

A man who was shot by police in northern Victoria last week after he and his brother allegedly threatened officers with a knife and a tomahawk has appeared in court.

Joshua Clavell, 30, and his 19-year-old brother were shot during the confrontation at a campsite in Barnawartha North, near the New South Wales border, on Wednesday night.

In a statement, Victoria Police said Mr Clavell faced court in Albury on Monday charged with a range of offences, including:

  • Seven counts of assaulting police
  • Intentional exposure of a police officer to risk by driving
  • Aggravated intentional exposure of a police officer to risk by driving
  • Damage to an emergency service vehicle by reckless driving

Police said Mr Clavell would be held in custody and extradited to Victoria ahead of a hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

His younger brother remained under police guard in a Melbourne hospital, police said.

Detectives from the Armed Crime Squad are still investigating the incident, with oversight from the force's internal watchdog, Professional Standards Command.
