Man faces court following alleged explosives find in Adelaide's CBD

The police bomb squad were called to the scene on Grenfell Street.

A man charged over the alleged discovery of explosives, guns and drugs at his Adelaide CBD apartment will remain in custody, after a short court appearance.

James Conant, 40, made his first appearance in the Adelaide Magistrates Court since his arrest yesterday.

A pocket of Adelaide's CBD was closed to pedestrians for several hours during a search of his property inside the Princes Apartments tower block at 39 Grenfell Street.

Mr Conant was charged with a range of offences including possessing explosives, firearms and other prohibited weapons as well as trafficking a controlled drug, and breaching bail.

His defence did not apply for bail.

Prosecutors asked for a seven-month adjournment due to the nature of the forensic evidence which needed to be analysed.

Police said testing of the explosive device by ballistics experts would take at least six months, but his defence argued that was an excessive delay.

Magistrate Anna Jackson set another hearing date for five months' time.

Mr Conant has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court in December.

Members of the SA Police Bomb Response Unit were yesterday called to Mr Conant's property along with other emergency services.

Police alleged they found a 22-calibre firearm and air rifle as well as drugs.
