Man extradited from Victoria after absconding from drug rehabilitation

A man extradited from Victoria will face several aggravated burglary charges in the ACT courts this week, after allegedly absconding from a drug rehabilitation facility in 2020.

The 38-year-old man was found guilty of multiple burglaries, as well as a ride/drive in a stolen vehicle offence in September last year.

He was sentenced to four years imprisonment but was referred to rehabilitation through a drug treatment order.

Police allege the man absconded from the rehabilitation facility after just one day and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

According to police, the man was subsequently arrested and directed back into the rehabilitation facility, however, he absconded from the facility a second time.

"Earlier this year he was arrested in Victoria and pled guilty to multiple property offences he committed while in that state," a spokesperson said.

"He was released from Victorian custody after serving his sentence on Friday."

Victorian police later arrested the man upon his release and extradited him to the ACT on Monday.

In addition to previous offences, the man has been charged with theft and aggravated burglary relating to offences he allegedly committed in the ACT after absconding from the drug rehabilitation facility the second time.

He is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
