Man exposes himself to grandmother in lay-by after spotting her alone

A man exposed himself to a grandma - after doubling back to target his victim.

Dean Kew, from Skelmersdale, spotted his victim sitting alone in a car, which was parked up in a lay-by, as she made a phone call.

The 53-year-old then turned his van around and pulled in behind the social worker's vehicle, near to a primary school, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Chester Crown Court heard the woman was talking to her son and making plans to look after her grandchildren.

But she saw Kew walk in front of his van, unzip his trousers, take out his penis and hold it while facing the road.

Kew - who the court heard didn't pleasure himself - denied any wrongdoing in the incident, on Manley Road in Cheshire, on August 9 last year.

And even though a jury found him guilty of indecent exposure following a trial, he still maintained his innocence.

Prosecutors said the victim had stopped in the lay-by, near to Manley Village School, not far from Helsby in Cheshire, because she was early for her shift.

Mark Phillips, prosecuting, said the victim initially thought Kew "was going to go the toilet" when she saw him expose himself.

When she realised what was actually happening, she asked her son what she should do, who told her to take down the registration number of the van and phone the police.

As a result, officers were able to trace Kew, of Abbeywood, Digmoor, and arrest him, only for the van driver to deny any wrongdoing.

Gareth Roberts, defending, said his client understood he had been convicted of a "very serious offence".

He said: "He accepts the verdict of the jury, albeit continues to protest his innocence."

However, Mr Roberts said Kew wished to apologise to his victim, stating: "It's a small step in him accepting he has done something wrong."

He told the court Kew had settled down in recent years, was leading "a productive life" and had the support of his partner.

Judge Simon Berkson told Kew: "You are somebody who acted in an appalling fashion.

"A care worker, working during the pandemic, was waiting for her shift to start.

"You clocked her, to use your own phrase - a lone female in her car. You turned your van around.

"Your intention was to expose your penis. And that's exactly what you did. It shocked her.

"Since then you've denied this offending. She didn't expect anything like that to happen and nothing like that should happen to a lone female."

He handed Kew a two-year community order, with a 30-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and 200 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Berkson also ordered him to pay a £500 contribution towards court costs.

Kew must sign on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.

Anyone with information or wants to report a sexual offence is asked to call 101 where you will be spoken to by specially trained officers or you can pass information to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
