Man explains why hotel staff should write down your room number when checking in

Travelling can be unnerving and make you feel vulnerable, no matter how much fun you have along the way.

There is lots of good advice on how to keep safe while travelling out there - including some wise words dispensed in viral video on TikTok.

If you get anxious about staying in hotels or hostels, especially by yourself, this video from Robin @dutchintheusa might leave you feeling more reassured.

The video has been viewed more than five million times (@dutchintheusa/TikTok)

His TikTok has been viewed more than five million times since it was uploaded one day ago.

The safety expert has racked up 982,000 followers on the platform where he shares videos on how to keep sage.

In it, he advises on the safest way to check into a hotel while travelling alone.

When you go to check-in, Robin advises that you hand over a piece of paper with your reservation and your ID.

And you should ask the staff to write down your room number so it can't be overheard.

Robin says you should always ask staff to accompany you to the room (@dutchintheusa/TikTok)

Once you have checked in, he advises that you should ask if a member of staff can accompany you to the room.

They can help you sweep the room to ensure it's safe and you can relax - once you've locked the door after they left.

His video has racked up more than one million likes and thousands of comments.

Many praised Robin for his safety advice, with one hotel worker commenting:  "I work front desk at a hotel and I promise if you ask this of us we will not get upset!!

"It's our job to make you feel comfortable and safe."

One seasoned traveller added: "I travel for work often and have done this!

"Never had a desk clerk that wasn't agreeable on all points."

But one confused commenter hadn't quite understood the gist of the video.

They joked: "I thought you wanted them to think you're a secret agent, I'm so embarrassed."

Another grateful commenter added: "I've never thought about this but WOW.

"Thank you for bringing this to my attention."
