A man is on the run after allegedly headbutting a police officer while being escorted from a court to the watch house in Warwick, south-west of Brisbane.

Police said they believed Stanthorpe man Clayton Alvoen might have been picked up by a getaway car and extensive patrols failed to spot him.

The 28-year-old had been in the Warwick Court House yesterday on drug, assault and domestic violence charges and escaped custody about 2:30pm.

Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Slater said Mr Alvoen was being returned to the watch house, after being remanded in custody in the Magistrates Court when he escaped.

"As he was approaching the watch house door, he fled from the officer … he attempted to jump a fence," Senior Sergeant Slater said.

"A struggle ensued with the officer where the officer was headbutted, the male person then fled on foot up, Fitzroy Street and into Guy Street here in Warwick."

Police said all persons involved in the domestic violence matters have been warned that he is on the loose.

Searches last night and this morning at Mr Alvoen's local haunts and interviews with his associates have failed to find him.

He is described as being fair, about 180 centimetres tall, slim, with black hair and brown eyes.

Officer treated for facial injury

Senior Sergeant Slater said the incident would be reviewed and would look at whether Mr Alvoen had been handcuffed at the time.

The injured officer received treatment for a facial laceration and is now recovering at home.

He said detectives from Warwick and Stanthorpe had been called in to track down Mr Alvoen and were trying to determine whether he may have crossed the border into New South Wales.

"That's one thing that we'll look at his movements … the investigation will lead us in the direction of where he may have gone," he said.

Senior Sergeant Slater urged the public to contact the police if they saw Mr Alvoen.

"While we don't believe there's danger to the public, we ask that he not be approached," he said.
