CHON BURI: A man narrowly escaped death after a car he was driving skidded off a road, hit a power post, overturned and then burst into flames in Bang Lamung district early Sunday, police said.

The accident took place at 4.40am on Sukhumvit Road in front of Wat Thung Krat temple. Pornchai Jailert, 27, the driver, broke a side window and wriggled out of his Toyota Camry before the vehicle burst into flames.

Disaster relief workers from the Bang Lamung Municipality managed to extinguish the fire after about 10 minutes. They took Mr Pornchai to Bang Lamung Hospital.

Police said Mr Pornchai would be taken for questioning to establish whether he caused the accident, which damaged state property. He would face charges if he was found responsible.
