Man due in court over Premier Inn fire which led to major emergency response

A 56-year-old man is due to appear in court today charged with arson being reckless over a fire at a hotel in Widnes yesterday.

Cheshire police said Andrew Bee, of no fixed address, was remanded into custody following the blaze at the Premier Inn.

Four fire engines, from Widnes, two from Runcorn and one from Penketh, were involved in tackling the incident after being called to the scene at The Hive leisure park at around 1.30am.

They were at the scene for around five hours.

Two firefighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the flames.

Crews then checked the hotel for hotspots with a thermal imaging camera.

In a statement issued this morning, a Cheshire police spokeswoman said: "A 56-year-old man has been charged following a fire in Widnes.

"Andrew Bee, of no fixed abode, was arrested and subsequently charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.

"He has been remanded in custody to appear at Warrington Magistrates' Court on Friday, August 21.

"The charges relate to an incident at 1.40am on Thursday 20 August at a commercial building on Venture Fields."
