Man drowns in Gage Park public pool

Francisco Martinez drowned while swimming in a pool in the 2400 block of West 55th Street, July 27, 2019, in Gage Park.

A 56-year-old man drowned in a public pool in Gage Park on the Southwest Side.

About 6 p.m. on July 27, Francisco Martinez drowned while he was swimming in the Gage Park Field House’s public pool in the 2400 block of West 55th Street, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was pulled from the pool and rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, but later died, police said.

The medical examiner’s office confirmed in an autopsy Friday that Martinez died from drowning. His death has been ruled an accident.

Area Central detectives are conducting a non-criminal death investigation, police said.
