Man drove BMW on wrong side of the road to get away from police

A man's driving became so dangerous that an off-duty police officer had to swerve to avoid him during a police chase.

Officers attempted to stop Christopher John Brown, 31, at around 1pm on Friday, October 23 in The Mount estate, Milford Haven, after he was seen driving a BMW "at speed".

Brown, of Meyler Crescent, Milford Haven, failed to stop when challenged and sped away. As police chased after him he drove on the wrong side of the road whilst overtaking a number cars waiting at an area of roadworks.

Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit (RPU) officers were then forced to stop their pursuit for public safety as Brown drove through a coned off area of roadworks where there was a "number of people" working.

Brown then drove through a stop sign, forcing an off-duty police officer driving in the opposite direction to take "evasive action".

Dyfed-Powys Police has praised members of the public who helped their officers find Brown after pointing out which direction he had driven in.

Brown went on to crash into a parked car, before getting out of his vehicle and attempting to hide behind another. He was found by a constable who arrested him on suspicion of dangerous driving.

A Pembrokeshire RPU spokesman said: "This was a highly dangerous incident, during which Brown put a number of people’s lives at risk.

"Driving through a stop sign and into a coned area of roadworks was simply beyond comprehension, and could have had a tragic outcome.

"As we decided to end the pursuit, we were assisted by a number of people, and the team would like to thank members of the public in Milford Haven for their help in tracing Brown."

He was charged with dangerous driving, driving with no insurance, driving while disqualified, failing to stop when requested by police, and possession of cannabis.

The vehicle, which had no insurance, tax or mot, was seized.

Brown admitted all five offences at Swansea Magistrates' Court on Saturday, October 24. He also pleaded guilty to an additional charge of driving whilst unfit through drugs.

He will now be sentenced at Swansea Crown Court on November 16.
