Man drops engagement ring in sea while proposing to girlfriend on surfboard

A man's romantic gesture of proposing to his girlfriend while surfing ended in disaster after he dropped the ring in the sea.

Christopher Garth, 38, got down on one knee on a surfboard, pulling out the ring and popping the question to Lauren Oiye, 32, who was surfing alongside him.

At first Lauren thought it was a joke, she later wrote on Instagram, but soon she realised it wasn't and was overjoyed.

But moments later Chris accidentally dropped the ring in the ocean.

Thankfully the 38-year-old had planned ahead and had used a spare, with the real engagement ring kept safe on shore.

The happy moment - before the drop - was caught by several photographers who had been close by.

“Story time: we caught a wave together at the surf break we met at and had many of our first dates,” the surfer wrote.

“I turn back to make sure he was on the wave with me and he was on one knee with a ring box and screamed out ‘Lauren, I love you! Will you marry me?!’”

“Christopher Garth, I love you and am so grateful the stars aligned and our ancestors that came before us so beautifully orchestrate this for us!” she stated.

“Here’s to a lifetime of laughter and keeping things simple and authentic!”

Tommy Pierucki, one of the photographs stationed to capture the proposal, wrote on Instagram that he was “stoked” for the newly-engaged couple.
