Man 'drives e-scooter at police officer' as MORE trouble breaks out at crime-hit Metrolink stop

A yob has been arrested after trouble again broke out at a Metrolink station plagued by anti-social behaviour.

Police issued a dispersal order for Radcliffe tram station and car park on Sunday after a large group of youths became abusive towards police officers and Metrolink staff.

The order, which gives officers powers to move anyone away who is either causing or likely to cause anti-social behaviour, was in place until 5.45pm on Monday (January 10).

However, police say they continued to receive abuse from yobs congregating in the station's underpass and on the car park yesterday.

In a separate incident, one officer was 'driven at by a male on an electric scooter'.

In a post on the GMP Bury South Facebook page, officers said: "Once again, Police Officers and Metrolink staff received abuse from large groups of youths congregating in the underpass and on the car park.

"Police Officers and Metrolink staff have been deployed to the area this weekend due to concerns from local residents regarding anti-social behaviour there at night.

"During this disorder, PCSOs and Police Constables issued multiple 'directions to leave' in order to disperse the crowd.

"Eventually the crowd did disperse and details of the trouble causers were taken.

"During the incident, one juvenile was arrested for failing to disperse and for a Public Order offence.

"Later on, whilst assisting Metrolink staff on the platform, one officer was driven at by a male on an electric scooter.

"This male was attempting to flee Metrolink staff as he had failed to purchase a ticket to use the service. The scooter was subsequently seized.

"This weekend a total of 15 parents have been visited by Police with regards to their children's behaviour and there are further parents to be visited.

"Police Neighbourhood patrols will continue to deploy to the tram stop in order to support Metrolink staff and members of the public."

It's understood officers were called to an area around the Metrolink stop, near to Radcliffe town centre, on Sunday evening in response to a large gang causing trouble.

The tram stop was also hit by a wave of disorder last autumn, when two teenagers were allegedly attacked in the space of two months, while mindless vandals smashed up tram windows in August.

Coun Carol Birchmore, who represents Radcliffe East, said she believes the youths could be travelling into town from elsewhere in Greater Manchester before causing trouble.
