A 29-year-old man was taken to hospital on Thursday morning after his car plunged into a pool on the Chulalongkorn University campus, following a dispute with his mother over rent for a condominium.

Investigators from the Pathumwan police station were alerted at 5.45am to a car submerged in a pool on campus. The driver, the sole occupant, was rescued and taken to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital by emergency responders.

Initial inquiries found the man had clashed with his mother before the incident, after she would not agree to pay 27,000 baht a month towards a condominium rental for him, leaving him stressed and frustrated.

Police said he then drove onto the campus grounds and headed for the pool. Security staff tried to stop him, but he accelerated through a barrier fence before the car went into the water.

Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances, including the man’s state of mind and what may have motivated the incident.
