Man ‘dragged from car and beaten’ in Cookstown

A man was left shaken after reportedly being dragged from his car and beaten in Cookstown earlier this month.

Police are appealing for information on the incident, which is alleged to have taken place at the junction of Killymoon and Lomand Heights in the Co Tyrone town on 1 November.

The man who reported the assault said he had been driving in the town before he was followed by another vehicle.

After a verbal altercation took place, the man was left with a cut lip. A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault in relation to the incident, but was subsequently released by police.

“Police are appealing for information following the report of an assault on a man in Cookstown on the evening of Monday 1 November,” a police spokesperson said.

“Sergeant McCartan said: “We received a report that a man had been assaulted at the junction of Killymoon and Lomand Heights at approximately 5pm.

“The man had been driving in the area, and believed he was followed by another car.

“When stopped, the driver of the second vehicle approached him and a verbal altercation ensued.

“This ended with the victim being dragged from his car and beaten. He sustained a cut lip and was, understandably, left badly shaken.

“A 26-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of common assault, was since released on bail pending further enquiries.

“It’s two weeks on, and I am appealing to anyone who was in the area, or who may have captured dash cam footage, to contact us on 101. Please quote reference number 1814 of 01/11/21.”
