Man 'doused in petrol' dies in hospital

A grandfather who suffered horrific burns when he was allegedly doused in petrol and set alight on Brisbane's bayside has died.

Victor Graveson, 65, died at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital after suffering burns to 80 per cent of his body during the alleged attack at his Alexandra Hills property on Friday.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the attempted murder charge laid against accused David Edgerley, 34, had been upgraded to murder.

During a brief court hearing for Edgerley on Monday, police prosecutor Perian Cardiff said surgery on Mr Graveson had to be aborted because of the severity of his burns.

Mr Graveson has a lengthy criminal history and had spent much of the last 20 years in prison for drug offences.

The motive for the incident on Friday is unknown, but police have confirmed Mr Graveson and Edgerley were known to each other.

Outside court, Mr Graveson's niece Tammy Davis criticised the media for their coverage of the case.

"The media has dragged enough mud and has not considered how much of a loving, caring, gentle son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend he was," she said.

Edgerley is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

He has not applied for bail and will be remanded in custody.

He was taken into custody after presenting at the Redland Hospital with burns to his hands hours after the alleged attack at Alexandra Hills.
