Man donates plants to brighten up the balcony on the QMC's coronavirus ward

A colourful balcony 'garden' has been created at Queen's Medical Centre offering small respite for its NHS Heroes.

Pot plants worth £200 were donated to the hospital after a kind-hearted listener heard a staff member's plea on Mark Dennison's Radio Nottingham show, on Wednesday (April 1).

Speaking on the airwaves the Covid-19 ward nurse told listeners how the balcony was the team's only chance to grab some fresh air while on shift but it was a bit bare.

"I thought, there's an opportunity to help," said Neil Cockbill, who then contacted Woodthorpe Plant Shop to see what they could offer. "I'm a bit too old to volunteer or at least my children think I am," the 62-year-old added.

"I called the plant shop and they explained what was possible. I thought I need to get this done because staff at the NHS are under the cosh.

Neil, who lives in Barrow upon Soar and works part-time at the Farmer and Carlisle dealership, then ordered 15 large pots of various colours and plants and 10 Senetti small pots.

They were delivered by Sue Suggitt, the Nursery Manager at Woodthorpe Park Plant Shop, on Tuesday, April 7.
