Man disqualified from driving 10 years ago arrested at the wheel of an Audi

A man who was disqualified from driving 10 years ago was arrested in Ballynahinch last night (Monday, August 9) when he was reportedly found at the wheel of an Audi.

He was subsequently interviewed by Newry, Down and Mourne police officers and charged to appear in court after allegedly driving while disqualified and without insurance or an MOT.

In a study conducted by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, published in March 2020, it was found that there were 47,065 detections for motoring offences in Northern Ireland during 2019 and, of those, over half (58 per cent) resulted in a referral for prosecution with a further quarter resulting in endorsable fixed penalty notices.

Speeding was the most common offence with a total of 7,578 detections, accounting for 16 per cent of the total detections in 2019.

Insurance offences, meanwhile, accounted for 7,560 of the detections with a further 4,158 detections related to careless driving offences, while drink or drug driving offences rose by two per cent to 3,005 in 2019 when compared to 2018.
