Man dies week after Cal City shooting that led to 7 arrests

May 17--A man facing charges in a Calumet City shooting last week died of wounds suffered in the incident, authorities determined Saturday.

Filmon Rezene, 25, who was shot about 1 p.m. in a May 4 attack in the 1600 block of Patricia Lane in the south suburb, was pronounced dead Friday at 8:54 a.m. at Stroger Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Rezene died of complications from multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide, the medical examiner's office determined following an autopsy Saturday.

Rezene, who the medical examiner said was from Seattle, had been in the Cook County sheriff's custody since he was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm and ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail May 8, according to the sheriff's office and court records.

Six other people were arrested following the incident, according to court records. Five of them charged with offenses related to the incident, while the sixth was arrested on an Indiana warrant. Three of the others also have been charged with attempted murder, according to court records, but it was not clear if any have been charged with shooting Rezene.

Calumet City police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
