Man dies suddenly at holiday park as police seal off caravans to probe death

Police are probing the "sudden" and "unexplained" death of a 59-year-old man at a caravan park that recently reopened as Scotland's coronavirus restrictions were eased.

Officers from Police Scotland rushed to the scene at the Southerness Holiday Park, in Dumfries and Galloway, just before 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Residents said specialist officers arrived and taped off a number of caravans at about 8pm. Forensics officers and ambulance crews were also at the scene as police investigated the circumstances.

Police Scotland later told the Daily Record that a 59-year-old had died suddenly at the caravan park, in the small coastal village of Southerness, and his death was being treated as "unexplained".

There are "no apparent suspicious circumstances", a spokesperson for the force added.

The holiday park's owner said the police assured there is no risk to anyone else, and added the death is not related to coronavirus.

A holidaymaker who was staying in the village told the Scottish Sun on Wednesday night: "The place is crawling with police.

"Several caravans have been taped off."

A Police Scotland spokesperson told the Record: "Officers were called around 5.20pm on Wednesday, 22 July, 2020 to a property in Southerness Holiday Village in Southerness, following the sudden death of a 59-year-old man.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained, although there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.

"A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

A spokesperson for Southerness Holiday Park told Mirror Online: “We are helping police with their enquiries after a death at the park on Wednesday.

"Our team has sent condolences to the gentleman’s family at this very sad time.

"We are offering support to our team and owners on park, who are understandably concerned, however the police have reassured us that there is no risk to anybody else on park.

"We would like to confirm the gentleman’s death is not Covid-19 related.”

Caravan parks in Scotland reopened from the Covid-19 lockdown last week as the Scottish government eased its restrictions.
