Man dies, pair in hospital after boat flips at Cronulla

A man died and two people were hospitalised after a boat capsized in Cronulla.

A man aged in his 40s has died and two people have been hospitalised after their boat capsized south of Sydney this morning.

About 9:40am emergency services were called to Bate Bay, at Cronulla, following reports that a boat had capsized.

Witnesses in the area helped bring the people to shore, who were reportedly fishing in the area.

The man in his 40s died at the scene, despite attempts by NSW Ambulance paramedics to resuscitate him.

A 26-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man were treated for minor injuries and taken to Sutherland Hospital.

The three people were wearing life jackets, said Chief Inspector Chris Hill from the Sutherland Police Area Command.

The boat, he said, was a "little 10-foot tinny".

Officers were assisted by the Marine Area Command, PolAir, Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter and Surf Life Saving Australia.

The recovered boat will be forensically examined.

A crime scene has been established and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.
