Man dies on Beresfield train station platform following alleged assault in Hunter Valley

A man has died on a train station platform in the Hunter Valley overnight following an alleged assault.

Emergency services were called to Beresfield train station, west of Newcastle in New South Wales, at about 6pm yesterday, where they found a 39-year-old man critically injured on the platform.

The man was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

A 27-year-old Newcastle man was later arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace police station where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail and will appear in Maitland Local Court today.

Trains travelling along the Hunter Line were directed to not stop at the station after the incident as forensic police continued to work at the scene.
