A man aged in his 60s has died in an industrial accident at Kooragang Island.

Emergency services were called to Heron Road at about 3pm on Wednesday following reports that a worker had been severely injured.

The Newcastle Herald understands the man, a contractor working for a demolition company, was struck in the head by a metal pole.

Despite the efforts of emergency crews he died at the scene.

A spokesman for logistics company Qube said the accident happened on a site that the company leased from the Port of Newcastle.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of a third-party demolition contractor who was working on a Qube ports facility in Newcastle earlier today," the spokesman said.

"Our thoughts are with the person's family, friends and colleagues and we are offering all the support we can during this difficult time."

SafeWork Australia has commenced initial investigations into the incident.

Officers from Newcastle City Police Area Command are also investigating.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
