Man dies in suspected Batemans Bay drowning

A man has died in a suspected downing near Batemans Bay on Sunday, police say.

Emergency services were called to Long Beach about 12.30pm, after a member of the public saw an empty kayak and told police.

South Coast Police District officers attended the beach and found a body in the water. An officer retrieved the body, before providing CPR until paramedics arrived. Despite best efforts, the man died at the scene.

The man is believed to be 43, but has not yet been formally identified.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has begun and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
