A man was fatally shot Sunday evening in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Emell Hill, 23, was walking in the 8300 block of South Burnham Avenue about 7:30 p.m. when a man approached him and fired shots, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

He was struck in the lower back and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, authorities said.

Hill, who lived in the same block where he was shot, died of multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner’s office said. His death was ruled a homicide.
