Man dies in pub balcony fall

It is believed the man was sitting on the back of a sofa chair when he fell.

A 28-year old Perth man has fallen to his death from a balcony at a popular pub in the centre of Fremantle.

The man was out with family and friends at the Sail and Anchor Hotel on South Terrace on Saturday night.

It is understood he was sitting on the back of a sofa chair on the second-storey balcony when he leaned back and fell through the plastic cafe blinds onto the pavement below.

It happened around 8:30pm.

A worker from the restaurant next door, Kasun Kavinda, 23, said the area, which is usually a tourist hotspot, was not very busy because it had been raining.

He said he saw paramedics trying to revive the man.

"I saw the light of the ambulance, then I (saw) one of the men fell down."

"The ambulance staff tried, they never gave up, they tried to [revive the man]... I think they tried nearly 15 minutes," he said.

The man was rushed to Fiona Stanley Hospital where he later died.

His birthday was just days away.

The manager of the Sail and Anchor pub said the incident was very distressing for staff and they had been offered counselling.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
