A man has died in custody at a police station in Melbourne's west.
Police say the 43-year-old Sunshine man was arrested on Tuesday and remanded in custody at Sunshine police station to appear in court on Thursday.
He was found unresponsive during a routine check about 11pm on Wednesday.
Officers started CPR while waiting for an ambulance to arrive, but paramedics were unable to revive the man, who died a short time later.
Detectives from the homicide squad will investigate the death, with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as is procedure when a person dies in police custody.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said the man fell and hit his head.
"It's a tragic accident," he told ABC radio.
The man's death comes some three months after a 50-year-old woman died in similar circumstances at Ballarat police station.
The woman was arrested on August 26 and when officers entered her cell to escort her to a court hearing the following day, they found her unresponsive.
Police officers and paramedics were unable to revive her.
Yorta Yorta grandmother Tanya Day fell and suffered a head injury while in a Castlemaine police station after she was arrested for being drunk on a train in December 2017. She died two weeks later.
While a coronial investigation found her death was clearly preventable, police decided against charging the officers involved following advice from the Office of Public Prosecutions.
