Man dies in north Qld helicopter crash

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the cause of the fatal helicopter crash. (AAP)

A man has died after his helicopter crashed in bad weather in the north Queensland outback.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority had been searching for the 84-year-old pilot and his R22 helicopter after it failed to reach its destination on Thursday night.

The AMSA challenger jet started searching for the helicopter just after 7pm, but it was called off at 2am on Friday due to severe weather.

The search resumed this morning along with six search and rescue helicopters and an additional fixed-wing aircraft.

Searchers found the aircraft's wreckage in a creek bed near Pretty Plains Camden Park Road, west of Hughenden, about 11.30am.

The pilot's body was found inside the wreckage.

Police and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau are investigating.
